Bitx40 meter SSB kit

Jul 8, 05:47 PM

Someone brought a BITX 40m SSB radio kit to the ham radio club meeting today and said they had got in over their head and wanted someone else to complete it.

So I volunteered.

No microphone nor speaker, but I have a speaker in all my Arduino and Radio Shack electronics and arduino kits.

I’ll be going over the circuit board and checking his work and then get to work on my part.

update: I haven’t done more than look at it.

No wasps yet in my shed. Hurrah !

Getting 240VAC put in. That will get my air conditioner/heater hook up done. Just then have to mount it in the window. Its heavy.

Ordered a 3800mAH battery for my Baefong. It doesn’t exactly fit. Apparently just missed the snap connection to hold it in place. I had to use my Dremel tool to trim it. A replacement is on its way. I’ll try that one, and trim if necessary. Possible pictures later. After contacting the seller, we both detemrined the battery wasn’t designed with the longer case of the Baefong UV-5RA in mind. They have changed they seller page to add this information.

end of update.

Serial to USB programming cable. After an hour of working with it, and it not being found by my Win 10 Home computer, an error message pops up. I would have preferred it popup early on, but it didn’t. The error informs me that the cable is 2.0, and my computer’s USB ports are 3.0. I thought that USB ports are backwards compantible, but apparently not. So I have to dig through storage boxes to find one of several USB strips I have.

And I’m still studying for my Amateur Extra license test.

This is a 2 meter/70 centimeter dual band radio. Came with a charger, ear buds, a charged battery, and a wrist strap.

It was on sale. I could afford it, the programming cable, and a spare 3800 mAH battery for less than I could get 2 batteries for my other 2 m radios.

Just waiting for my programming cable to go with it. I found a youtube video by Bob Nagy that got me started.

electricity in progress

Relatives and I are working on getting line power, mains, out to my shack/shed. Just a few more feet, along with the circuit panel, breakers, and wall sockets.

My radio’s power supply will be its own breaker. Then lights will be on their own breaker.

update: Now have line/mains power to 4 wall sockets. Each pair are on one breaker.

Now I just have to get the rest of the wiring, insulation, and mount my air conditioner so it will be cool in there during summer.
